The IDF reservist who was arrested by the Shin Bet and denied access to a lawyer after he saved Jews from an Arab mob was released by the Petach Tikvah Magistrate’s Court after six days in custody, Arutz Sheva reported.
Judge Erez Noreli denied the request by the police and the Shin Bet to extend the reservist’s detention and accepted the demand of his lawyer, Attorney Nati Rom, to release him. He was placed under house arrest for three days.
Prior to the hearing, and following a public and legal struggle, the reservist met with a lawyer for the first time after six days of Shin Bet interrogations. The order barring the meeting was unexpectedly lifted earlier that morning.
Attorney Rom stated, “I hope this marks the end of a troubling case of a soldier’s detention under draconian orders. Hopefully, those who need to draw conclusions from this affair will indeed do so. Enough of the persecution of IDF soldiers, enough of using tools meant for terrorists against soldiers.”
The reservist was arrested for his suspected role in killing a Palestinian who had attacked Jewish shepherds. While the reservist, who served hundreds of days of reserve duty as an officer during the war in Gaza, was held under harsh conditions, none of the Arabs who had attacked the Jews were even arrested or investigated.
