In line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, the Ekiti State Police Command has launched a new Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) and commenced specialised training for its operatives.
The move is aimed at strengthening the security of lives and property across towns and villages in Ekiti State.
Speaking during the launch of the Violent Crime Response Unit at the Command Headquarters in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Michael Falade, said the unit was created to further bolster the state’s security architecture.
He described the VCRU as a rapid-response outfit designed to tackle violent crimes more effectively.
According to CP Falade, the establishment of the unit became necessary due to the evolving nature of criminality and the need for a dedicated team that can respond swiftly to distress calls.
He noted that operatives of the VCRU have already begun intensive, tactical, and intelligence-driven training to prepare them for field deployment.
The Commissioner charged officers posted to the new unit to maintain the highest level of professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights while discharging their duties.
He warned that the Command would not tolerate lapses, misconduct, or abuse of power under any guise.
Mr. Falade called for the cooperation of all residents, urging them to support the VCRU with timely and credible information that could aid crime prevention and detection.
He stressed that community partnership remains vital to the success of any policing strategy.
The CP also commended Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, for his consistent support to the Command, particularly in the areas of logistics and operational mobility.
He said the state government’s backing has been critical to the recent successes recorded against criminal elements.
In his goodwill message, the Secretary of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) in Ekiti State, Mr. Lawrence Ogunsetire, pledged the committee’s full support for the new unit.
He said the PCRC would mobilise communities to work with the VCRU so that residents can sleep with both eyes closed.
Also speaking, the National Provost Marshal, Pastor Joshua Makinde, expressed confidence that officers of the VCRU would complement the efforts of existing units within the Command.
He praised the Ekiti Police Command for its prompt response to criminal activities in recent times.
