The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of one of its staff members, Jessey A. Audu, who reportedly slumped and died while on his way to work in Gwagwalada Area Council.

The tragic incident, which occurred on Tuesday morning at Gwahaon area near an Army checkpoint, has left colleagues and family members in shock.

A staff of the union, Ibrahim Adamu, said the deceased left his home early in the day but suddenly collapsed and fell into a drainage along the roadside.

According to him, passersby who noticed the motionless body raised an alarm before the police and some residents rushed to the scene.

Adamu said the police, with the assistance of locals, identified the deceased and contacted officials of the NUT, who immediately mobilised and evacuated him to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada.

However, medical personnel at the hospital confirmed him dead on arrival, and his remains were subsequently deposited at the morgue.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of the FCT NUT wing, Comrade Mohammed Abdullahi Shafas, said the union had been devastated by the loss.

“I just returned from the morgue where we deposited the remains of Jessey,” he said briefly.

Findings indicated that the deceased, who worked as a cleaner at the FCT NUT state secretariat, was a native of Yelwa community in Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, but resided in Unguwar Dodo, Gwagwalada.

Colleagues described him as a diligent and committed worker who was active and healthy as recently as Monday.

One of his colleagues, who simply identified himself as Chris, said the deceased was at work the previous day, carrying out his cleaning duties before closing around 4:00 p.m.

“We were together on Monday. He cleaned everywhere, closed work around 4 p.m. and went home. He was hale and hearty,” he said.

Police authorities in Gwagwalada Division also confirmed the incident, noting that preliminary observations suggested a sudden collapse before he fell into the drainage.

The sudden death has continued to generate grief within the NUT secretariat, with staff members struggling to come to terms with the loss of their colleague.

The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital morgue, while arrangements for burial are expected to be announced by the family.
