Emotions ran high as former Konshisha Local Government Council Chairman, Moses Iorhen Shirsha, and his wife, Mercy Mngusonun Shirsha, were laid to rest on Friday at their family compound in Shirsha Adeega Village, Mbator Gaav, Konshisha Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue state.
The late Shirsha reportedly died four days after the passing of his wife while making arrangements for her burial.
Mourners and sympathisers who attended the funeral offered prayers for the repose of their souls and comfort for the bereaved family.
A former governor of Benue state, Samuel Ortom, was represented at the burial by his media aide, Terver Akase, an indigene of the area who described the incident as a deeply painful moment for the community.
Posting on his verified Facebook page after the funeral, Akase said the community was confronted with profound grief as the couple was buried on the same day.
“One of the most painful moments any family or community can endure is the heartbreaking task of burying a husband and wife on the same day,” he wrote.
“Today, we in Mbator, Mbatsen in Konshisha were confronted with that deep sorrow, as one of our illustrious sons, Hon. Moses Iorhen Shirsha, and his beloved wife, Hon. Mercy Mngusonun Shirsha, were laid to rest. The grief is heavy and the loss immeasurable.”
Akase further noted that the late Shirsha was the first Students’ Union President of Benue State University and later served as Chairman of Konshisha LGA, while his wife previously served as a Senior Special Assistant to the Benue state governor.
He added that the couple, who lived together in life, were laid side by side in death, praying that God comforts the Shirsha Adeega family and grants the departed eternal rest.
