Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared that he would speak out if choosing candidates for election in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) becomes transactional, where tickets go to the highest bidder.
According to him, who people are today is more important than who they were yesterday.
The former Governor of Anambra State added that he would leave the ADC if the party’s processes also become compromised, arguing that he can never be involved in electoral fraud.
He stated this on Monday when he was challenged during an interview with Arise News on his political journey, which has seen him move across several parties.
The anchor pointed out that moving from one party to another instead of staying to fix the problems, may affect the trust of Nigerians in him, probably due to perceived political inconsistency.
In response, Obi disclosed that he left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the build-up to the 2023 presidential election because the members were not playing by the rules, and getting a party ticket had become transactional.
“In PDP, people were not playing by the rules, it was transactional, and I can not be part of a transactional primary,” Obi declared.
Challenged by the anchor on the reality that those same people he accused of wrong practices in the PDP are the same people he is working with in the ADC, Obi replied that he would speak out if the same transactional practices happen in the ADC ahead of the 2027 elections.
During the interview, Obi revealed that he first left the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for the PDP due to a fallout with his successor as the Governor of Anambra State, adding that the decision was taken when the relationship became toxic and to allow a focus on governance.
Obi blamed the ruling government for his decision to leave the Labour Party.
