Iran threatens Bahrain, others with Hormuz closure ‘forever’ if they back US resolution

A senior Iranian official on Saturday, May 9, threatened Bahrain and other governments with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz “forever” if they back a US-backed UN resolution targeting Iran.

In a post on X, Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, warned governments siding with Washington would face “severe consequences”.

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital lifeline; do not risk closing it on yourselves FOREVER,” he wrote in a post on X.

The remarks came after the US revised a UN Security Council resolution demanding Iran stop the attacks, mining, and interference with shipping in the strategic waterway.

Bahrain is among the governments backing the draft resolution, Reuters reported.

The resolution also calls on Iran to stop threatening commercial shipping and disclose the locations of sea mines in the Strait, through which roughly a fifth of the world’s oil passes.
