Nigerian carrier Ibom Air has raised the red flag over an unprecedented spike in aviation fuel prices, revealing that the cost of fuelling a single flight has jumped from an average of N2.1 million in January to approximately N7.6 million as of April 27, 2026.
The airline, known for operating some of the most fuel-efficient aircraft in Nigeria’s domestic market, said the surge represents a more than 350% increase since early March, a span of just seven weeks.
Despite sourcing over 95% of its fuel from the Dangote Refinery, the carrier described the situation as a severe crisis that is pushing domestic airlines to the brink.
In a strongly worded statement signed by Group Manager, Marketing and Communication, Aniekan Essienette, Ibom Air noted that it has so far absorbed massive operating losses without passing on the full cost to passengers, citing intense competition and a sense of patriotism.
“We chose to do this believing that the crisis would pass in a week or two, but it has persisted now for nearly two months, continuously increasing, with no reprieve in sight,” the statement read.
“At this point, domestic airlines are baffled at why the price of aviation fuel in Nigeria has ballooned to this level, way above the rest of the world.”
The airline warned that current conditions are unsustainable and could force it to reduce flight capacity in the coming days to remain operational a move already being taken by airlines globally in response to fuel price pressures, though Nigeria’s increases far exceed international averages.
“If this situation persists much longer, airlines will not be able to continue operating just to pay for fuel and nothing else,” Essienette added.
The carrier urged fuel marketers to urgently review their pricing to ensure the viability of Nigeria’s airline business model.
The development comes amid broader challenges in the Nigerian aviation sector, including reports of potential industry-wide actions and calls for government intervention on related costs.
Ibom Air, however, reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining services for passengers and the nation while seeking immediate solutions to the fuel crisis.
