The Chairman of Imota Local Council Development Area, Hon. Benson Sunday Ayodele, has commenced a comprehensive gutter clearing exercise across major roads within the council area as part of renewed efforts to improve environmental sanitation and prevent flooding.

The exercise, which began on Friday, 17 April, 2026, is targeted at clearing accumulated waste, debris, and blockages from drainage channels to ensure the free flow of water, particularly as the rainy season approaches. The initiative is expected to address long-standing issues of waterlogging in several part of the council area.

Speaking on the development, Hon. Benson emphasized that the project reflects his administration’s commitment to proactive governance and sustainable environmental management. He noted that maintaining clean and functional drainage systems are critical to protecting lives, preserving infrastructure, and promoting public health.

According to the Chairman, the gutter distillation exercise will be executed in phases to ensure thorough coverage of all major roads and inner streets across Imota LCDA. He assured residents that no part of the community would be neglected in the ongoing sanitation drive.

Hon. Benson also called on residents and business owners to support the initiative by refraining from indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage channels. He stressed that collective responsibility and community cooperation are essential to sustaining the benefits of the exercise and preventing a recurrence of blockages.

The Imota LCDA Chairman further revealed that the council is considering the introduction of stricter enforcement measures against environmental offenders as part of broader efforts to maintain hygiene standards.

Officials from the Environmental Services and Waste Management Department of Imota LCDA, led by the Head of Department, Mr. Ogunmodede Emmanuel, were on ground to supervise the smooth execution of the project. Other key officials, including environmental health officers and sanitation personnel, Sanitarian Adewale Adebisi and Sanitarian Wahab Saidat Oladunni, also participated in the operation.

The Deputy Director of the department, Mr. Dauda Waheed Adisa, noted that the exercise is part of a broader strategy to improve sanitation standards within the council.

Reacting to the initiative, a resident of Itun-Opopo Street, Mrs. Fasasi Noimot, described the exercise as timely and commendable, expressing optimism that it would significantly reduce flooding and improve environmental cleanliness.

As the exercise continues, stakeholders within Imota LCDA have also called for sustained investment in drainage infrastructure, emphasizing that consistent maintenance of drainage systems is vital for urban development and the well-being of residents.
