The University of Calabar has conferred on the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, a Doctor of Philosophy Degree during the 38th convocation ceremony of the institution, Saturday.

His doctoral research was also adjudged one of the most outstanding projects which, the UniCal authorities said, earned a place at the University’s Achievement Exhibition on Contribution to Knowledge.

Recall that the institution had on Tuesday, held an Academic Exhibition, bringing together different faculties and colleges to present what they considered their most outstanding works.

The Post Graduate College had presented Rt Hon Kalu’s thesis, titled “Evaluating the Efficacy of Anti-Terrorism Legislation in Nigeria: Human Right Challenges and Lessons for Emerging Democracies,” as one of the best works the School has produced.

Speaking on behalf of the PhD graduating class shortly after the event, Kalu reflected on the rigours and rewards of the doctoral journey, describing it as “demanding, humbling, and transformative.”

He also described the moment as personal, noting that the University of Calabar had shaped his academic journey across multiple stages, having previously earned his LL.B and LL.M degrees from the same institution.

The Deputy Speaker highlighted the sacrifices behind every thesis and noted that a PhD was not merely a title but a call to responsibility,

Highlighting his legislative efforts, Kalu reaffirmed his commitment to expanding access to education through initiatives such as: Federal College of Education, Bende Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Item Bende and Federal University, Okigwe.

Saviour Ekpe, a seasoned Journalist and scholar, while exchanging views with Journalists shortly after the event, said the research represents a significant contribution to contemporary and policy development in the area of counter terrorism and democratic governance especially as it made efforts to proffer solutions to Nigeria’s hydra-headed security challenges.
