The Kano State Government has concluded plans to organise a mass wedding for about 1,500 couples as part of its ongoing social welfare intervention aimed at supporting vulnerable residents.

The initiative, popularly known as Auren Gata, is being implemented under the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The Deputy Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Dr. Mujahideen Aminudeen, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Kano.

Aminudeen said the programme was designed to ease the financial burden of marriage and promote social stability by helping willing couples formalise their unions.

He noted that the state government expanded the initiative following the success recorded in previous editions, which he said had positively impacted beneficiaries across the state.

According to him, Governor Yusuf has directed that all arrangements for the exercise be finalised before the end of May.

“The mass wedding scheme is part of government’s broader efforts to support less-privileged individuals who are ready to start family life but are constrained by economic challenges,” Aminudeen said.

He explained that participation in the programme is strictly voluntary and subject to clearly defined procedures, dismissing allegations that the board compels individuals into marriage.

Prospective couples, he added, must obtain endorsement from their respective traditional leaders and demonstrate mutual consent before submitting applications.

Aminudeen further disclosed that all intending participants would undergo comprehensive medical screening, including tests for HIV, genotype compatibility, and other health conditions.

He said pregnancy tests would also be conducted for female applicants as part of measures to uphold the integrity and well-being of the exercise.

“The process is transparent and designed to ensure that only eligible and willing participants benefit from the scheme,” he said.

The mass wedding programme has, over the years, become a recurring intervention by the Kano State Government, aimed at addressing social challenges linked to delayed marriages and economic hardship.
