The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, has emphasised the need for closer collaboration between security agencies and residents to strengthen safety and preserve peace across the state.

He made this known on Thursday during a stakeholders’ security meeting held in Ikeja as part of activities commemorating the 2026 National Police Week.

According to the police chief in Lagos, the effective policing goes beyond law enforcement agencies, stressing that members of the public play a critical role in maintaining order and preventing crime in their communities.

He noted that community policing has continued to yield positive results in Lagos, particularly through increased engagement and cooperation between residents and security operatives.

Tijani explained that the week-long activities are aimed at fostering trust, improving communication, and reinforcing partnerships between the police and the public.

He disclosed that while National Police Day will be observed on April 7, various programmes have been lined up to promote awareness and deepen public involvement in security matters.

The commissioner highlighted the importance of timely intelligence, urging residents to promptly report suspicious movements and activities to security agencies.

He pointed out that information from the public remains a vital tool in crime prevention, as security personnel cannot be present in all locations at once.

The police boss also raised concerns about increasing social vices, particularly cult-related activities among youths, calling on parents, guardians, and community leaders to take proactive steps in guiding young people away from crime.

On the political front, Tijani cautioned against any form of electoral violence as the country prepares for another election cycle, urging politicians and their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully.

He reassured residents of adequate security measures ahead of the Easter celebrations, noting that officers would be deployed to strategic locations, including places of worship and other public spaces, to ensure safety.

While affirming that Lagos remains relatively secure, he stressed the need for sustained vigilance, especially given the state’s growing population.

Tijani reiterated the commitment of the police to safeguarding lives and property, while urging residents to continue supporting security efforts to maintain the peace enjoyed across the state.
