Makinde To Unveil Preferred Successor In May, Awaits Supreme Court Ruling

The Governor of Oyo State Seyi Makinde

There are strong indications that Oyo residents may have to wait a little longer to know the governorship candidate that Governor Seyi Makinde will support ahead of the 2027 election.

The governor said he would unveil his preferred candidate before the end of the first week of May, as political activities intensify across the state.

NOP NIGERIA reports that Makinde disclosed that wide-ranging consultations are currently ongoing, involving elders, religious leaders, and other critical stakeholders.

According to him, the process has already produced a number of frontrunners, but no final decision has been made.

“We are approaching that point of decision. I have been consulting widely with our elders, fathers of faith and other critical stakeholders,” he said in a newsletter released over the weekend.

He added that the responsibility of picking a candidate requires careful consideration to ensure broad acceptance.

The governor also dismissed claims that he had secretly endorsed any individual for the governorship race.

He maintained that no candidate has been anointed, despite growing speculations within political circles.

Makinde hinted that his eventual political direction, including the platform for the election, would depend on the outcome of an impending ruling by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The ruling is expected to address issues affecting the Peoples Democratic Party, which could influence his next move.

“There have also been questions about the platform on which we will proceed. For now, we await the decision of the Supreme Court regarding our party,” he said.
