Commuters and residents in Taraba state are grappling with fresh disruption after the Namnai Bridge in Gassol Local Government Area was overtaken by floodwaters, following one of the season’s early rainfalls.
The incident, which occurred after just the second rainfall this year on Friday, left numerous vehicles unable to pass, effectively halting movement across the route, as travelers were stranded on both sides, while commercial and daily activities in the area came to a standstill.
Locals said the development did not come as a surprise, acknowledging earlier warnings about the weak condition of the bridge, especially after temporary repair work were largely ignored
The recurring problem has deepened hardship in the community, cutting off access and affecting livelihoods that depend on the busy route.
Many residents expressed frustrations, urging the government to move beyond stopgap measures and deliver a lasting solution.
Observers have also criticised what they said is a continued neglect of critical infrastructure in the state, questioning authorities’ commitment to long-term development.
Drivers plying the route voiced dissatisfaction with the slow response to the bridge’s condition, pointing out that nearly two years after it was first washed away, a permanent fix is yet to be completed.
