The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its indefinite nationwide strike and directed members to resume duties on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
The decision was announced on Tuesday following a National Executive Council meeting.
NARD President Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman said the suspension came after fresh government assurances on the disputed welfare packages, particularly the revised Professional Allowance Table (PAT).
The association had embarked on the strike over the Federal Government’s plan to discontinue the PAT implementation, which includes better call duty allowances, shift allowances, and other incentives agreed upon in 2025.
While welcoming the assurances, NARD issued a fresh April 21, 2026 ultimatum to the government to fully resolve all outstanding issues, including:
Immediate reversal of the PAT suspension
Payment of promotion and salary arrears
Completion of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF)
Settlement of other pending entitlements
Failure to meet the deadline will trigger resumption of the strike without further notice.
The brief industrial action had raised concerns about disruption to healthcare services. The suspension brings temporary relief to patients, though the situation remains conditional on government compliance.
