The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, saying the country will overcome its current challenges and attain greatness.
The monarch made this known in Lagos on Wednesday through the Sarki Fulani of Lagos, Mohammed Abubakar Bambado II, at the presentation of a book titled “Gani Fawehinmi and the Nigerian Press”, authored by Basirat Fawehinmi-Biobaku.
According to a statement issued on Friday by Prince Bashir Adefaka on behalf of the Sultan’s Media Team, the event celebrated the life and legacy of the late human rights lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi.
Represented by Bambado II, the Sultan described Fawehinmi as a fearless advocate of justice whose contributions left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s democratic development.
He said, “Today, we gather to celebrate the life, legacy, and enduring impact of the late Gani Fawehinmi—a man whose courage, conviction, and unwavering commitment to justice shaped the conscience of our nation.
“Through his voice and actions, he stood firmly for truth, accountability, and the rule of law.”
The Sultan commended the author for documenting the relationship between the media and the pursuit of justice, noting that a free and responsible press remains critical to democratic governance.
He urged leaders and citizens, particularly young Nigerians, to emulate Fawehinmi’s ideals by speaking truth to power, defending the oppressed, and upholding justice.
The statement added that the monarch expressed hope that the book would continue to inspire commitment to building a just and equitable society.
Other dignitaries at the event included the Governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani; human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN); former senator, Shehu Sani; political economist, Pat Utomi; and activist, Joe Okei-Odumakin, among others.
The statement concluded with prayers for peace, unity, and sustained progress in Nigeria.
