The Nigerian Navy has said it will release the list of successful applicants for its planned warship sail between May 1 and May 3, 2026, following an overwhelming response from the public to the initiative.

No fewer than 11,000 Nigerians applied for the opportunity, a figure the Navy described as far exceeding its initial expectations. The Director of Naval Information, Abi Folorunso, disclosed the development in a post shared on his X handle on Friday, expressing surprise at the scale of interest generated within a short period.

“So far over 11,000 persons have applied to sail on a Nigerian Navy warship!! First I must confess that I didn’t expect this number of persons,” he said.

He, however, noted that operational limitations would make it impossible to accommodate all applicants, citing restricted onboard capacity of the designated vessels.

“Challenge is we cannot get over 11,000 people onboard the limited space on the designated ships,” Folorunso added.

He explained that shortlisted candidates would be announced within the stated window, advising applicants to check the Nigerian Navy’s official social media platforms for updates and further instructions.

“We will be disclosing the successful applicants between May 1-3, 2026. All applicants will need to visit @NigerianNavy and other Nigerian Navy social media platforms to check,” he said.

The initiative, introduced earlier in April as part of activities for the Nigerian Navy’s annual celebration, is designed to enhance public engagement and foster closer civil-military relations. The programme, often referred to as a “citizens’ sail,” offers selected participants a rare opportunity to experience life onboard naval platforms.

The Navy had opened an online application portal shortly after announcing the exercise, encouraging interested Nigerians to register. It also leveraged its verified digital platforms to outline participation guidelines and eligibility requirements.

Navy Week, the annual event under which the initiative falls, typically features a range of activities including ship tours, ceremonial parades, medical outreach programmes, and community engagements across coastal regions.

According to the Navy, the warship sail experience represents a strategic addition to its outreach efforts, aimed at improving transparency and showcasing operational capabilities to the public.

The service further stated that all selected participants would undergo screening procedures and must comply strictly with safety and onboard regulations, given the sensitive nature of naval operations.
