The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched its newly approved Staff Conditions of Service (CoS), marking a significant step toward strengthening staff welfare, institutional efficiency, and global best practices in accident investigation.
The Director-General of the NSIB, Capt. Alex Badeh Jr., during the launch on Friday in Abuja, said the document is a “collective covenant” that goes beyond administrative rules to define the rights, responsibilities, and professional expectations of all personnel within the agency.
He said the development comes amidst broader reforms under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose Renewed Hope Agenda has repositioned the Bureau to report directly to the presidency.
According to him, this restructuring is expected to enhance the agency’s operational independence and reinforce its role as Nigeria’s sole multimodal accident investigation body.
He said the newly approved CoS provides clear frameworks for career progression, including appointments, promotions, and training opportunities.
He said it also establishes transparent disciplinary procedures and outlines comprehensive welfare provisions such as leave entitlements, medical services, allowances, and performance-based rewards.
He emphasised that the document balances employee rights with a strong demand for professionalism, confidentiality, and dedication qualities considered critical in safety investigation work.
He said “the Conditions of Service guarantees that diligence, integrity, and commitment will be recognised and rewarded.
“It aims to foster a unified and highly disciplined workforce capable of meeting international standards,” he said.
He acknowledged the contributions from key stakeholders, including the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, whose collaboration was instrumental in finalising the document.
He urged the staff and union leaders to study and internalise the provisions of the CoS, which takes immediate effect, as part of efforts to build a more motivated and efficient institution.
According to him, the implementation of the new framework is expected to improve operational effectiveness and ultimately contribute to enhanced safety outcomes across Nigeria’s transportation sectors.
