Sanwo-Olu Not Under Pressure To Resign, Lagos Govt Debunks Report

The Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led Lagos State Government on Tuesday dismissed reports alleging that the governor was under pressure to resign over health concerns, describing the claim as “false and misleading.”

The state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, through the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, said the report—attributed to an online platform—was a fabrication aimed at misleading the public.

Akosile, in a statement, maintained that the governor remains “in good health, mentally fit, and fully committed” to discharging his responsibilities.

“The report is false in its entirety. Nobody has asked the Lagos State Governor to resign. This is another fake news,” the statement read.

The rebuttal follows a viral publication which claimed that Sanwo-Olu was facing pressure to step aside on health grounds, with his deputy, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, allegedly being positioned to assume office.

However, the government clarified that Hamzat only paid a routine visit to the governor to formally inform him of his intention to contest the governorship, noting that the meeting was cordial and in line with political tradition.

“Earlier today, the Deputy Governor visited the Governor to formally notify him of his intention to contest for Governor. The meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere, as is customary,” the statement added.

The state government further expressed concern over what it described as a growing trend of misinformation from certain online platforms, urging the public to disregard unverified reports and rely on credible sources for information.

Sanwo-Olu, who is serving his second term as governor of Lagos State, has continued to make public appearances and carry out official engagements in recent weeks, amid the swirling speculation.
