A former Kano state governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, the Sardaunan Kano, has submitted a letter of resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The resignation letter dated April 19, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman of the PDP Giginyu Ward of Nasarawa Local Government Area (LGA), Kano state is signed by Senator Shekarau.

Part of the letter reads “Accept this letter please as notice of my resignation from my position as member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), with effect from today Sunday April 19, 2026.

“This decision follows wide and and extensive deliberations within my political group, to pursue our political career in a different political party.

“Kindly note that this correspondence is copied to Kano state PDP Chairman and the PDP Chairman of Nasarawa Local Government Area.”

The former Education Minister visited President Bola Tinubu and later received the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, at his residence in Kano earlier in April, 2026, who called on him to join the ruling party.

During the visit, Shekarau said he would soon exit the PDP, citing persistent internal crises within the opposition party.

According to him, consultations on his political future were nearing completion, with all options under consideration.

He told the APC National Chairman then that “You came at a time we are making final preparations to exit the PDP, which we understand has been severely affected by internal issues.”

Shekarau added that any decision he and his supporters would take would be guided by what he described as a “Kano First Agenda.”

“My movement, alongside my Shura Council, supporters and associates, is based on a Kano First agenda. Anything that benefits Kano is where I stand,” he said.
