Many people may dream of relocating abroad, but you might not realise that certain countries will actually pay you to do so. If you fancy living in glorious sunshine while earning some money in the process, you could embark on the travel adventure of a lifetime by packing your bags for good.

Countries such as Spain, Italy and Greece will actually pay Brits “thousands” to relocate and begin a new life overseas. Whether you’re tired of the British weather, keen to start a fresh chapter or simply want to move somewhere entirely different, it could well be worth considering to shake things up.

Schemes available to people were recently highlighted on TikTok by History On A Map, revealing what prospective movers need to know. It’s remarkable to think you can actually be paid to relocate to these stunning countries.

Italy

Italy is amongst the countries offering financial incentives to newcomers. If you fancy tucking into pasta, savouring magnificent wine and immersing yourself in rich history, you can actually be paid to make the move. It explained: “Regions like Calabria, Molise and Sardinia are suffering from massive depopulation.

“To revive these ghost towns, the local governments are offering between €10,000 (£8,705.50) to €30,000 (£26,116.50) to people under 40 who are willing to settle there.” It transpires that Italian regions such as Calabria, Molise and Sardinia are offering financial incentives to counteract dwindling populations in rural communities.

Schemes have been reported that provide up to €30,000 for those willing to relocate to towns with fewer than 2,000 to 3,000 inhabitants. Typically, to qualify for the scheme, applicants must be under 40, establish a business or undertake home renovations. There are certain criteria that must be met in order to take advantage of the offer.

Spain

Likewise, rural towns are actively seeking new residents, including Ponga in Asturias. The video explained: “As part of the empty Spain initiative, the town of Ponga is offering €3,100 per person just to move there.”

According to reports, this figure is actually claimed to be between €2,971 and €3,000 per person (often reported as roughly £2,600) to new residents. Nevertheless, there are further incentives available for couples and families to help reverse its shrinking population.

Should you be tempted to take the plunge, the scheme demands a five-year commitment to residing in the area. Put simply, you’ll need to be absolutely certain before submitting your application.

Greece

Another option is relocating to the tiny island of Antikythera in Greece, where residents are reportedly paid up to €500 per month for the first three years. The relocation package is designed to repopulate the region, offering new inhabitants a house, a plot of land and the monthly payments.

The initiative is primarily aimed at families and skilled professionals such as bakers, builders and farmers to bolster the local community.

Other options

The video also highlights that people can be paid to move to Japan. The amounts people can be paid differ, as every scheme has its own set of guidelines, and may not be as much as detailed in the video.

While people cannot be paid simply for relocating to Ireland, grants are available for those who move to renovate properties on its remote offshore islands. There are all manner of schemes people can take advantage of, but it’s not as straightforward as packing your bags.

There are conditions people must adhere to in order to benefit, and these vary depending on where you wish to apply to move. Carry out your research to find out more.
