
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reappointment of Dr Usman Abubakar as the Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Bida, Niger state, for a second term.
The reappointment was contained in a statement issued by Mr Arokoyo Kayode Philip, Head of the Public Relations Unit of the Federal Medical Centre, Bida, and made available to newsmen in Bida on Friday.
According to the statement, the reappointment was conveyed in a letter dated April 14, 2026, and signed by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako.
The statement added that the minister urged the medical director to justify the confidence reposed in him by the federal government and wished him a successful tenure.
It noted that the reappointment followed the successful completion of Dr Abubakar’s first four-year term as medical director of the centre.
During his first term, the tertiary health institution recorded significant improvements, including major infrastructural upgrades, expansion of specialist medical services, digitalisation of operations in key departments, and enhanced workforce capacity development.
Stakeholders in the health sector have described his leadership as focused, visionary and result-driven, noting that the centre has witnessed improved service delivery and sustained infrastructural development under his administration.
Reacting to his reappointment, Dr Abubakar expressed appreciation to the federal government for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to consolidate on the achievements recorded during his first tenure.
He said his administration would continue to pursue policies and programmes aimed at strengthening the hospital’s service delivery and advancing its strategic development agenda.
Dr Abubakar added that the centre would remain committed to providing quality healthcare services while expanding its capacity to meet the growing health needs of the people.
Dr Abubakar is a Consultant Paediatrician and a former Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Niger State Chapter.
