The Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) Wednesday tasked road users across the country to ensure proper maintenance of government roads in their respective areas.
Speaking through a director in the agency, Francis Isabiyi, during an on the site assessment of the repair of the major sectional failures along Saki-Ago Are Road, the agency said it is time for Nigerians to see government roads as their property.
The FERMA director frowned at the attitude of motorists and other road users towards the maintenance of Federal and other roads, saying over 80% of the noticeable sectional failures on the road are man made through spilling of the diesel and digging of holes on the road.
Isabiyi added that there is a need for road users to stop the attitude.
He pointed out that the federal government through its relevant agencies is expending huge amounts on the maintenance of the affected roads.
“Both the road users and the residents should see the roads in their respective areas as their property because the government is spending so much in the maintenance of the roads.
“We have heard that people will dig holes in the middle of the roads. This is a bad habit that needs to be corrected.
“The community people should report anybody caught in this ignoble act to the relevant security agencies. We should all note that motorable roads play a pivotal role in the socio economic growth of the country,” he said.
