Tottenham’s fight for Premier League survival has been rocked by confirmation that captain Cristian Romero will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury suffered in the 1-0 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Cristian Romero, a 27-year-old Argentina defender limped off after a collision with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, sparking fears he could be ruled out for the run-in. Medical tests have now confirmed a high-grade partial tear of his medial cruciate ligament, with an expected recovery time of up to eight weeks.
The diagnosis rules Romero out of Tottenham’s final six league games and leaves his place in the Argentina national team squad for this summer’s World Cup in doubt.
The setback arrives at a critical stage for newly appointed head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who is battling to keep Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. Spurs sit 18th in the table, two points behind West Ham United just above the relegation zone.
Off the pitch, Tottenham are pushing ahead with plans to strengthen their defence, holding advanced talks over a free transfer for Andy Robertson following his decision to leave Liverpool FC at the end of the season.
The Scotland captain is set to depart Anfield after nine years, and Spurs have maintained long-standing interest after an unsuccessful January approach. Discussions are understood to be at an advanced stage, although any deal depends on Tottenham securing Premier League survival.
