A young man identified as Musa has been arrested for allegedly killing his mother, Nana, over a dispute concerning a ₦40 million inheritance meant for him.

The incident reportedly occurred penultimate Monday night when Musa demanded access to the money left for him by his late father, insisting he needed it for a planned business trip to Canada.

However, his mother declined, citing concerns about his readiness to manage such a large sum, particularly in view of what sources described as his extravagant lifestyle and alleged substance abuse. In a fit of anger, he allegedly killed her and left her body in her room.

According to accounts from neighbours, Musa continued his routine after the incident, allegedly driving his mother’s car to social outings and returning home while the body remained in the house.

Suspicion arose on Wednesday when residents noticed a foul odour coming from the apartment and alerted security operatives.

Security personnel reportedly arrived at the residence but did not find Musa at home. They, however, waited until he returned later that day, driving his mother’s vehicle and holding food. He was subsequently arrested.

A source familiar with the incident said, “When he got back, the officers were already waiting. He was arrested immediately, and when the door was opened, they discovered the decomposing body of his mother inside the room.”

The Department of State Services (DSS) is said to have taken custody of the suspect following his arrest.

Meanwhile, the deceased was buried on Thursday at the National Mosque in Abuja. She was said to be survived only by the suspect, her only child.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the case as investigations continue.
