The National Emergency Management Agency and the International Organization for Migration on Monday received 170 stranded Nigerians repatriated from Libya under the Assisted Voluntary Return Programme.

The returnees arrived at the Cargo Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, around 3:36 p.m. aboard an Air Buraq Airlines flight from Tripoli.

Speaking with journalists, the Head of NEMA Lagos Operations Office, Mohammed Olatunde, said the exercise was conducted in collaboration with the National Commission for Refugees Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons.

He explained that the initiative, supported by the Federal Government and IOM, was aimed at ensuring the safe, dignified and humane return of Nigerians stranded abroad.

A breakdown of the returnees showed that 163 were adults, comprising 129 males and 34 females, while seven children and two infants were also on board.

Olatunde added that one of the returnees, an adult male, was attended to for a medical condition upon arrival.

He said officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service carried out biometric registration and documentation of the returnees as part of standard procedures.

According to him, the evacuees were provided with food, potable water, medical care and psychosocial support, while ambulance services and other logistics were deployed to ease their reception and reintegration into society.

The Assisted Voluntary Return Programme, facilitated by IOM, is part of ongoing efforts to evacuate Nigerians stranded in crisis-hit countries, including Libya.
