A U.S. lawmaker has demanded the dismissal of Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, over alleged connections to banditry, following renewed outbreaks of violence in parts of the country.
In a report published on April 14, 2026, Florida State Representative Kimberly Daniels called on Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to review leadership within the defence ministry, citing concerns that certain individuals may be weakening national security efforts.
The report, supported by members of the United World Congress of Diplomats from various countries, also pointed to recent Easter-period attacks in Plateau State, Kaduna State, and Nasarawa State.
The call comes shortly after deadly attacks on communities and worshippers during Palm Sunday and Easter celebrations, which left dozens of dead across affected states. While Nigerian troops reportedly rescued some abducted victims, concerns persist over the widening gap between official responses and the realities on the ground.
Daniels’ report raised issues around credibility, governance, and strategic leadership, referencing longstanding allegations tied to Matawalle’s tenure as governor of Zamfara State. These include claims of engagement with bandit groups and inconsistencies in addressing insecurity allegations he has consistently denied.
The report recommends an immediate leadership review, a transparent investigation into the claims, and stronger security measures to protect vulnerable communities, particularly in the North-Central and Northwestern regions.
Although President Tinubu has condemned the recent attacks, the report stresses the need for decisive action beyond public statements. It also highlights growing concerns among citizens and stakeholders over continued insecurity and the need to restore confidence in the country’s security architecture.
As pressure mounts, it remains uncertain whether the federal government will act on these recommendations, but the situation underscores increasing calls for stronger, more accountable leadership in Nigeria’s fight against insecurity.
