Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has strongly criticised former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, over comments he made about Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle, accusing him of belittling the sacrifices of activists who fought against military rule.
Obi had earlier reacted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s derecognition of some leadership figures in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), during which he suggested that former military ruler, late General Sani Abacha, could be viewed as more democratic than some activists from the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) era.
The statement sparked widespread backlash, with many critics arguing that it undermined the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists during the military period.
Reacting in a post shared on X on Friday, Fani-Kayode described Obi’s remarks as offensive to the memory of those who lost their lives and freedom while resisting military dictatorship.
He accused Obi of trivialising the sacrifices made during the June 12 pro-democracy struggle, insisting that mocking those who died or suffered during the movement was unacceptable.
Fani-Kayode also issued a strong warning regarding Obi’s political future, claiming that the remarks could negatively affect his chances of becoming Nigeria’s president.
The controversy is one of several reactions trailing INEC’s decision on the ADC leadership dispute, which continues to generate heated debates within Nigeria’s political space.
