Socio-cultural group, Ethnic Youth Leaders Forum, has passed a resounding vote of confidence on the Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, describing him as a man of integrity, competence, and proven commitment to democratic ideals.
The group’s position comes in response to a protest staged by some UK-based Nigerians at the UK Parliament in April 2026, where calls were made for the removal of Prof. Amupitan over allegations of partisanship and supposed affiliations with the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Reacting to the development, the Forum, in a statement signed by its Deputy Spokesperson, Mirabel Ashara, Monday, condemned the protest, describing it as “misguided, politically motivated, and lacking in credible evidence.”
According to the statement, “We find it deeply troubling that individuals who are far removed from the realities on ground in Nigeria would attempt to discredit a man whose career has been defined by professionalism, fairness, and adherence to the rule of law.”
The group noted that Prof. Amupitan’s track record in academia, public service, and legal practice speaks volumes about his capacity to lead INEC with neutrality and transparency, especially as the nation prepares for the 2027 general elections.
“Allegations of partisanship must be backed by verifiable facts, not mere speculation or politically charged sentiments. So far, no concrete evidence has been presented to substantiate these claims,” the statement added.
The Forum further emphasized that the independence of INEC must be safeguarded against undue external pressures and unsubstantiated campaigns aimed at undermining public confidence in the electoral process.
“We urge Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could erode trust in our democratic institutions. Constructive engagement, rather than sensational protests, remains the appropriate channel for addressing concerns,” Ashara stated.
The group called on security and relevant authorities to remain vigilant against attempts to destabilize the electoral system through misinformation and undue political pressure.
