Activist and co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls movement, Aisha Yesufu, has resigned her membership of the African Democratic Congress and defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, declaring her intention to contest the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.

Yesufu announced her defection in a statement on Wednesday, describing the move as part of an ongoing political realignment ahead of the next electoral cycle.

She said her decision was informed by what she termed a “deeper understanding” of Nigeria’s political trajectory, adding that the coming days would be critical in shaping the country’s future.

The activist-turned-politician linked her defection to her continued support for former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who recently moved to the NDC after a brief stint in the ADC.

According to her, loyalty to Obi influenced her political movements.

She said, “When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise, I am joining the NDC.”

Yesufu disclosed that her move to the NDC would not be limited to party membership, as she confirmed plans to vie for the FCT Senate seat.

“This time, I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT senatorial seat,” she said.

She added that she had formally concluded all responsibilities within the ADC before her exit, noting that her transition was orderly.

“I have tidied up all my obligations to the ADC, ensuring a clean transition,” she stated.

Reflecting on her time in the party, Yesufu said she served in several capacities, including as sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair and secretary at different levels, describing the experience as invaluable.
