“Alive, Functioning and in Control” — Tehran Sends Strong Message on Khamenei’s Leadership

According to a report published Thursday by the Financial Times, Iranian authorities have increasingly addressed speculation surrounding Khamenei’s condition as questions continue to emerge over who is directing key decisions within the Islamic Republic during the current conflict.…....

The report stated that the comments are intended to reinforce the perception that the supreme leader continues to oversee major state affairs and will personally determine whether Tehran agrees to any potential arrangement with Washington aimed at ending hostilities.

Recent discussions within political and diplomatic circles had suggested that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was playing a dominant role in national decision-making, fueling speculation that power may have shifted away from the office of the supreme leader.

Vali Nasr, a former United States official and professor at Johns Hopkins University, said the recent messaging from Tehran was designed to counter those claims.

“They are projecting that there’s no change … the supreme leader was the apex of the system and is still the apex,” Nasr was quoted as saying.

“And that he’s alive, functioning and in control,” he added.

Nasr further stated that the Revolutionary Guards also wanted to convey that they were not independently directing state affairs and that Khamenei remained actively involved rather than serving as a symbolic figurehead within Iran’s political structure.
