According to a report by Vanguard on Friday, May 29, 2026, Christopher Musa has described the alleged coup plot against President Bola Tinubu as “foolhardy,” insisting that such an attempt would not succeed because Nigerians, including civilians, would resist any effort to overthrow the democratically elected government.
He made the statement on Friday during an appearance on Arise Television while responding to questions on national security and the ongoing trial of individuals accused of involvement in the alleged plot.
Musa’s comments came amid proceedings involving military officers, civilians, and a cleric who are currently standing trial over allegations of participating in the purported coup attempt.
He used the platform to address concerns surrounding the case and to reaffirm the commitment of the Armed Forces to constitutional order and democratic governance in Nigeria.
The Defence Minister stated that those accused of being behind the alleged plot lacked proper direction and understanding of the consequences of their actions.
He suggested that the individuals involved misled junior officers into participating in activities that were not aligned with the discipline and structure of the military institution.
He further maintained that the idea of staging a coup in present-day Nigeria was unrealistic, emphasizing that both the military establishment and the civilian population would resist any such attempt.
According to him, the political environment and national awareness have made it impossible for unconstitutional changes of government to succeed.
Musa also reiterated that the Armed Forces remain committed to supporting democracy and ensuring the stability of the country.
He noted that efforts continue within the military to uphold professionalism, discipline, and loyalty to the Constitution, particularly in light of past experiences with military rule in Nigeria.
He said, “Anybody thinking about planning a coup is wasting their time. Even the civilians in Nigeria will have taken them down. So I think it was just foolhardy for them to have done what they are trying to do or what they wanted to do….See More
