New Nigeria goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has expressed excitement over the prospect of making his debut for the Super Eagles after completing his international switch from England.
The 24-year-old Wrexham goalkeeper is expected to be considered for the upcoming Unity Cup and next month’s international friendlies against Portugal and Poland.
Born in Camden to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo previously represented England at youth level during his time at Arsenal before switching allegiance to Nigeria.
FIFA approved the goalkeeper’s nationality switch last month.
According to reports, the decision followed discussions with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle during the Unity Cup tournament in June 2025, which Nigeria won.
Speaking in a Nigeria Football Federation-branded video, Okonkwo described the opportunity to represent Nigeria as a huge honour.
He said: “It’s an honour being given the opportunity to play for your country.
“I am so excited, I can’t wait.
“To finally have the opportunity is incredible.”
Okonkwo joins Nigeria’s growing list of goalkeepers led by Stanley Nwabali and including Francis Uzoho, Maduka Okoye, Amas Obasogie and Ebenezer Harcourt.
The goalkeeper progressed through Arsenal’s academy before loan spells at Crewe Alexandra and Austrian club Sturm Graz.
He later joined Wrexham on loan in 2023 before sealing a permanent move a year later.
Okonkwo has since become Wrexham’s first-choice goalkeeper, making 121 appearances and helping the club secure two promotions.
This season, he featured in 44 matches across all competitions and kept 10 clean sheets as Wrexham narrowly missed promotion to the Premier League.
