Chelsea star João Pedro misses Brazil’s final World Cup squad

Chelsea forward João Pedro has been left out of Brazil’s final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite an impressive season at Stamford Bridge.

Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti omitted the 24-year-old from the squad announced on Monday night after the forward scored 23 goals and won Chelsea’s Player of the Season award during his debut campaign.

The decision immediately sparked debate among fans and pundits, particularly following the inclusion of veteran forward Neymar despite concerns over his fitness and limited recent involvement with the national team.

Ancelotti admitted João Pedro’s performances in Europe justified consideration for the squad but insisted tactical balance influenced his final selection.

The Brazil coach reportedly believed other attacking profiles better suited the squad structure for the tournament.

Instead of João Pedro, Brazil selected Brentford striker Igor Thiago, teenage winger Rayan of Bournemouth and youngster Endrick.

João Pedro later reacted to the disappointment with a composed message shared on social media.

He said: “I tried to give my best at all times.

“Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible to fulfill this dream of representing my country in a World Cup, but I remain calm and focused.

“Joys and frustrations are part of football.

“From now on, I wish good luck to everyone who is there, and I will be just another fan cheering for them to bring the sixth title home.”

Brazil’s squad for the tournament includes experienced names such as Alisson, Marquinhos, Casemiro, Raphinha, Vinicius Junior and Neymar.

The Selecao will head into the tournament seeking a record-extending sixth World Cup title under Ancelotti, who is preparing for his first major competition as Brazil manager.
