The book presentation also featured a major donation from businessman Aliko Dangote, who gave N500 million in support of the publication and its wider dissemination.
Similarly, industrialist Abdul Samad Rabiu acquired copies of the memoir titled My Life of Duty and Allegiance valued at N25 million, which are to be shared across selected institutions.
Vice President Kashim Shettima stood in for President Bola Tinubu at the ceremony held in Abuja, which attracted senior officials, diplomats and retired military leaders.
The autobiography, structured in 20 chapters, presents Gowon’s personal journey, his military service, leadership years, and reflections on national governance and post-conflict reconciliation in Nigeria.
During the event, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese Matthew Kukah was responsible for reviewing the book, highlighting its historical relevance and leadership lessons.
Danjuma, who was also chief presenter at the launch, was represented by retired General Martin Luther Agwai, a former Chief of Defence Staff.
Beyond his financial support, Danjuma further instructed that 12 copies of the autobiography be procured for each of the 20 universities that previously awarded Gowon honorary doctorate degrees, ensuring wider academic access.
Speakers and attendees emphasized the importance of documenting the experiences of past leaders as a reference for future governance and policy direction.
The event ended with widespread commendation of Gowon’s service record and recognition of the memoir as a valuable contribution to Nigeria’s historical archive, with expectations that it will be widely studied in academic institutions across the country.
