De ligt pens emotional statement after surgery takes away World Cup dream

Matthijs de Ligt has suffered a major setback after undergoing surgery on a persistent back injury, ending his season and ruling him out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The defender, who plays for Manchester United, has not featured since November and had only recently resumed light training before the condition worsened, forcing medical intervention.

United confirmed the procedure was successful, stating that the decision was taken after extensive rehabilitation efforts failed to deliver sufficient progress.

Club confirms medical decision

In an official statement, Manchester United explained that the surgery was deemed necessary to protect the player’s long-term fitness.

“Matthijs de Ligt has undergone successful surgery to address a back injury. Having diligently worked throughout his rehabilitation process, the decision was made that a corrective procedure was the best course of action,” the club said.

The setback effectively ends any prospect of De Ligt returning before the end of the campaign and eliminates his chances of participating in the upcoming World Cup in North America.

De Ligt expresses frustration over injury

De Ligt also addressed supporters on social media, describing the physical and emotional toll of the injury.

“After 6 months of treatment and working hard to get back, surgery was the only option left,” he wrote.

“I’m disappointed I couldn’t help the team the last 6 months and obviously missing out on the World Cup but I am looking forward to doing everything to get back in front of the fans.”

The Dutch defender added that he had pushed through multiple recovery attempts since November but ultimately accepted surgery as the only viable solution.

United defensive options stretched

The injury leaves Manchester United without one of their key defensive signings for the remainder of the season.

Manager Michael Carrick had previously hoped De Ligt could return before the campaign ended but repeatedly stressed caution over his rehabilitation timeline.

United will now rely on Lisandro Martínez, Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven to complete the season.
