Decapitated body of nursing student discovered in hostel

The police say they are investigating the incident.

The decapitated body of a female nursing student has been discovered in her hostel room in Umulogho, a community within the Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State.

The victim was reportedly killed by yet-to-be-identified assailants in Nigeria’s South-east region.

PREMIUM TIMES gathered that the victim, Wendy Achumba, was found beheaded in her hostel room on Thursday evening.

Ms Achumba, who hailed from Abia State, was a student of the College of Nursing in Umuadara village in the Umulogho Community of Obowo council area of Imo State.

Sources from the community told this newspaper that neighbours forced her door open when she neither stepped out nor responded to repeated knocks.

One of her neighbours who asked not to be named said the victim had completed her midwifery programme and was undergoing post-basic training at the institution.

She said the victim was full of life a day earlier.

“When some people forced her door open, we found out the door was locked from inside. Her mobile phone was missing and her body was mutilated,” she said.

The police spokesperson in Imo State, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday.

“The Command is aware of the tragic incident involving the death of a female student of the College of Nursing, Umulogho, whose body was discovered in her private off-campus apartment,” Mr Okoye, a deputy superintendent of police, said.

The police spokesperson said the divisional police officer in charge of the area visited the location alongside other operatives upon receiving the information.

He said the operatives subsequently recovered and deposited her body in the mortuary “while investigations have commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and arrest those responsible.”

“Consequently, the (Imo State Police) Command appeals to students and members of the public to remain calm, assuring them that the situation is under control and that every effort is being made to ensure those behind the act are brought to justice,” he added.
