The bail conditions that were imposed on Nasir El-Rufai by the court are exorbitant and unwarranted, according to Rotimi Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State and minister of transportation.…....
While discussing current events in the country’s politics and judiciary, Amaechi made the comments during an interview that aired on Trust TV. The outgoing governor stated that certain bail conditions show a lack of understanding of the role of the judiciary and individual freedom.
The terms of El-Rufai’s bail, in his view, exceeded what is normally required by law and were incompatible with what one would expect from a democratic government. His main point was that the situation had been blown out of proportion, which makes it hard to have fair trials.
“They left something out,” Amaechi claimed during the interview. To prove he will not get away, he should dig up the graves of his parents, who passed away, and bring their bodies to display.
He made the statement while expressing his disapproval of the conditions, which he claimed were unrealistic and a reflection of larger difficulties with the country’s handling of political and legal matters. Such actions, he said, might lead to public confusion and unneeded anxiety.
