El-Rufai’s Ally Lawal Wins Ogun ADC Governorship Primary With Wide Margin

A close associate of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, Mr Jimi Lawal, has clinched the governorship ticket of the African Democratic Congress in Ogun State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Lawal emerged winner of the party’s primary election held across the 236 wards in the state, polling a total of 19,428 votes to defeat his closest rivals.

Announcing the results on Monday at the party’s secretariat, the ADC National Organising Secretary and Secretary of the Ogun State Primary Election Committee, Adebimpe Adelowo, said Lawal secured a landslide victory over Abiodun Collins Ogundipe, who garnered 5,775 votes, and a United States-based medical doctor, Dr Marie Abolaji Odusina, who polled 4,825 votes.

Adelowo declared, “Having scored the highest number of votes, Hon Jimi Lawal is hereby declared the winner of the Ogun State governorship primary election and the ADC candidate for the 2027 general elections.”

He disclosed that the exercise was conducted over the weekend and monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission across all wards, noting that the electoral umpire expressed satisfaction with the turnout and orderly conduct of party members.

The party scribe also dismissed speculations about his removal from office, insisting that he remains the duly recognised National Organising Secretary in line with the party’s constitution.

Citing Article 14 (13) (iv) of the ADC constitution, Adelowo said his office is empowered to coordinate and implement all field activities of the party.

He further expressed confidence in the party’s chances in the 2027 polls, describing the ADC as “the party to beat,” while stressing that it remains united and committed to grassroots mobilisation.

According to him, the results of the primary have been forwarded to the party chairman in his capacity as Chairman of the State Congress, in compliance with relevant provisions of the party’s constitution.
