Emeka Rollas, the former president of the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria (AGN), is honouring late actor Alex Ekubo on his birthday.
Kemi Filani reported on Tuesday that the light-skinned actor had passed away on Monday, May 11th, after a battle with Cancer and was 40 years old.
In a heartbreaking statement, his family announced that the actor had passed away after a brief but courageous battle. According to the statement, he passed away at Evercare Hospital due to complications arising from advanced metastatic kidney cancer.

In a lengthy post on his Instagram page, the immediate past president appealed to his friends, family, colleagues, fans and the entire entertainment industry not to organise any birthday surprises, celebrations, or parties for him at the moment.
Giving reasons, he said the pain of losing Alex is still deeply felt, and that this is a time for sober reflection, prayer, and unity within the industry. He said instead of celebrations, he asked for just one birthday gift: a two-minute silence in honour of the late actor.
“Today would have been a day of celebration for me, but my heart is too heavy for festivities.
In honour of our beloved brother, colleague, and former Special Assistant on Youth Development during my administration at the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Alex Ekubo, I humbly appeal to friends, family, colleagues, fans, and the entire entertainment industry not to organise any birthday surprises, celebrations, or parties for me at this moment.
The pain of losing Alex is still deeply felt, and I believe this is a time for sober reflection, prayers, and unity within our industry.
Instead of celebrations, I ask for just one birthday gift today, across Nigeria, on film locations, offices, studios, cinemas, homes, and wherever members of our creative family may be, we observe two minutes of silence in honour of Alex Ekubo.
Let us pause together to remember a man whose talent, warmth, laughter, and presence touched so many lives.
May God grant his soul eternal rest and give strength to everyone mourning this painful loss.
Thank you all for your love, understanding, and prayers.
Chief Dr Emeka Rollas, MON
President Emeritus, Actors Guild of Nigeria”.

Last year, netizens expressed concern about Alex’s absence on social media. The light-skinned actor hasn’t been active on Instagram since 2024.
Speaking up for him, Oma Nnadi had addressed those sending her messages about him. Oma told them to stop looking for Alex as he is healthy, well and fine. She noted how everyone must not be on social media.
The talented actor was later spotted in a video with some kids.
