The political crisis rocking the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has taken a dramatic turn as Governor Siminalayi Fubara announced his withdrawal from the party’s governorship primary ahead of the 2027 elections.
Fubara, in a statement personally signed on Wednesday, said the decision followed “deep reflection and extensive consultations,” adding that he would support whoever emerges as the party’s candidate.
The governor’s withdrawal comes amid intensifying internal wrangling within the APC in Rivers State, where rival factions have been locked in a prolonged struggle for control of the party structure.
“I have taken the difficult but necessary decision to withdraw from the APC governorship primaries. I do so with a full heart and a firm commitment to support whoever emerges as the candidate of our great party,” Fubara said.
He acknowledged that the move might disappoint his supporters but urged them to remain calm and committed to the party, describing the APC as a collective political family.
The governor also disclosed that his recent silence on political developments in the state was deliberate, noting that he had been confronted with “enormous pressure and difficult choices.”
Fubara expressed appreciation to the APC leadership for providing him a platform, while also thanking President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support and encouragement during the process.
He further called on party faithful to remain united, stressing the need to prioritise the overall interest of the state above personal ambitions.
The development comes barely hours after reports that over 60 aspirants believed to be loyal to the governor were disqualified from the party’s House of Assembly primaries, a move widely seen as a major blow to his political camp.
