The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria has tightened oversight of welfare services for Nigerian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia, rejecting substandard meals and launching investigations into tour operators accused of exploiting intending pilgrims.
The commission said the measures form part of efforts to enforce strict compliance with health and safety regulations during the ongoing Hajj, particularly amid extreme weather conditions in the Kingdom.
In a statement issued on Thursday, NAHCON disclosed that several dinner meals supplied to pilgrims on Wednesday were rejected after failing to meet approved handling and packaging standards.
The exercise, according to the commission, was carried out in collaboration with Saudi health authorities to safeguard the wellbeing of Nigerian pilgrims.
Despite the development, NAHCON said affected pilgrims were promptly provided with alternative light refreshments to minimise disruption.
The commission added that its board members had briefed state coordinators on the situation, while the Chairman, Ismail Abba Yusuf, directed the security committee to investigate the caterers responsible for the rejected meals.
It further disclosed that arrangements had been concluded to ensure refunds for pilgrims affected by the incident.
In a related development, the chairman ordered a probe into tour operators allegedly involved in the illegal movement of unregistered pilgrims and other exploitative practices.
He warned that any operator found culpable would face stiff sanctions, including the revocation of operational licences.
NAHCON, however, expressed appreciation to pilgrims for their patience and cooperation, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring their safety and welfare throughout the Hajj exercise.
