Dr Kadir Obafemi Hamzat has accepted the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress for the 2027 Lagos governorship election, pledging to build a more inclusive and people-centred state if elected.
Hamzat accepted the nomination in an acceptance speech released after emerging as the APC’s gubernatorial candidate for the 2027 election, where he expressed gratitude to party leaders, members and supporters for entrusting him with the mandate.
The state Deputy Governor described the nomination as a humbling moment, thanking Almighty Allah, the leadership of the APC and party faithful across Lagos for their confidence in his candidacy.
“Today, I accepted the nomination of our great party, the All Progressives Congress, as its gubernatorial candidate for the 2027 Lagos Governorship Election with deep gratitude,” he said.
“I am truly humbled by this honour and I thank Almighty Allah, our party leaders, and every member who has placed their trust in me.”
Hamzat reflected on his political and professional journey, noting that his background in Mushin shaped his commitment to service, hard work and governance that prioritises the welfare of ordinary citizens.
“My journey started in Mushin, shaped by hard work, service, and the belief that government must improve the lives of ordinary people,” he stated.
He added that his years in public service exposed him to the demands of governing a megacity like Lagos and the importance of visionary leadership.
“Over the last two decades, I have had the privilege of serving Lagos in different capacities alongside exceptional leaders who laid the foundation for the progress our state enjoys today,” Hamzat said.
According to him, governance requires experience, planning and consistency to sustain development and improve living conditions for residents across the state.
“As Deputy Governor, I understand that keeping a megacity running requires careful planning, experience, and steady leadership,” he added.
Hamzat said his decision to contest the governorship election was driven by the desire to build a Lagos that delivers opportunities and improved living standards for all residents, irrespective of social or economic status.
“My decision to run comes from one simple question: how do we build a Lagos that works better for everyone?” he said.
“Whether you are a fisherman in Badagry, a trader in Mile 12, a mechanic in Yaba or a corporate executive in Victoria Island, this government will work for you.”
He also outlined key areas his administration would prioritise, including transportation, healthcare, education, security, employment and economic opportunities.
“We must continue to invest in transportation, jobs, education, healthcare, security, and opportunities that give people hope and dignity,” Hamzat stated. “We must build a Lagos where no one is left behind and where every child can dream beyond the circumstances they were born into.”
While acknowledging the progress already recorded in Lagos, the APC candidate said he remained optimistic about the future of the state and the possibilities ahead.
“I am proud of what we have achieved as a state, but I am even more excited about what lies ahead,” he said.
Hamzat further appreciated Bola Ahmed Tinubu, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, members of the Governance Advisory Council and APC stakeholders across the 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas for their support.
