I’d be unemployed without music, says Ayra Starr + Video

Afrobeats star Ayra Starr has revealed that she would likely be unemployed if she had not found success in music, describing her career in the entertainment industry as a life-changing opportunity.

The singer made the disclosure during a recent chat with EE72, where she reflected on her rise to fame, her journey with Mavin Records and the realities of living in the spotlight.

Speaking candidly about what her life might have looked like without music, Ayra Starr said she never considered content creation as an alternative career path.

“If I were not doing music, I would literally be unemployed. “I do not even think I would be a content creator. That would be a lot of work. I would just be vibing in my mother’s house, eating my mother’s food,” she said.

The 24-year-old also recalled her excitement when she discovered that Mavin Records founder Don Jazzy and members of his team had been listening to her songs before offering her a recording contract.

“I was so excited when I found out they were listening to my music. You know who it is,” she said. Ayra Starr, born Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, joined Mavin Records in 2020 after being discovered by Don Jazzy through social media.

Since then, she has grown into one of Nigeria’s most successful music exports, releasing projects such as ‘19 & Dangerous’ and ‘The Year I Turned 21’, while earning multiple awards, nominations and international recognition.

Despite her success, the singer admitted that fame comes with its own challenges, revealing that she sometimes wishes the public knew less about her. “I really wish people knew less about me. Once the camera comes on, I cannot stop talking. And I feel like I overshare,” she said.

Her comments offer a glimpse into both the opportunities and pressures that have accompanied her rapid rise from a social media discovery to one of Afrobeats’ biggest global
