The horrific late-night dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil claimed the lives of 16 students and left 74 others injured.
The fire broke out at 12:00 AM while the learners were asleep, with eyewitnesses reporting that a jammed door trapped the victims inside as the flames spread rapidly.
According to the government, investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the fire, with eight students already in custody.
Sonko travelled to Nakuru to visit the students who were still in the hospital, but found they had already been transferred to Nairobi for better treatment.
He also called on the Education Cabinet Secretary to ensure that justice is found for those who lost loved ones in the fire and perpetrators are brought to book.

“Currently at Nakuru General Hospital to check on the progress of students injured in the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy. Unfortunately, I was informed that all the injured students were transferred to Kenyatta Hospital in Nairobi. I will now travel back to Nairobi to visit them, see how they are responding to treatment and stand with the families during this painful moment. My prayers remain with all the affected students, parents and teachers. May God grant a quick recovery to the injured and comfort to the bereaved families,” he said.
The flashy politician also pledged to give grieving parents whatever they need to support them in burying their children.
“We are also willing to extend a helping hand to the bereaved families by providing VIP hearses and coffins free of charge, alongside other support necessary to ensure the departed students are given a dignified send-off,” he added.
