A civic group, Lagosians for Truth and Justice, has renewed its call for transparency, accountability and an independent forensic review into the death of late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, aka Mohbad.
The group made the demand in a petition addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Fatai Tijani, and copied to the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu.
In the petition signed by the group’s spokesperson, Rotimi DaSilva, and obtained by NGBREAKINGNEWS Metro on Tuesday, the group expressed concern over what it described as unresolved contradictions and growing public distrust surrounding the circumstances of the singer’s death.
Mohbad died in September 2023, with the circumstances surrounding his death generating widespread reactions and calls for justice from Nigerians and the international community.
The group, however, noted that nearly three years after the singer’s death, Nigerians were still being confronted with uncertainty, contradictions and delays in the investigative process.
It added that the matter had evolved beyond entertainment discourse and had become a national test of public confidence in the Nigerian justice system.
“We write once again regarding the deeply troubling and unresolved circumstances surrounding the death of Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, whose passing continues to generate national concern, public distrust, and growing frustration among millions of Nigerians at home and abroad.
“Nearly three years after his death, Nigerians are still confronted not with certainty, but with contradictions; not with clarity, but with confusion; not with confidence in the investigative process, but with increasing suspicion, institutional silence, and prolonged delay.”
The group stated that concerns earlier raised in a public letter published in a national newspaper on December 12, 2025, remained unresolved despite increasing public concern.
It added that contradictory public statements, disputed forensic narratives, unresolved toxicology concerns and inconsistencies in witness testimonies had continued to fuel suspicion among members of the public.
The group further stated that public confidence in law enforcement could not survive where transparency is absent.
The organisation subsequently demanded what it described as a completely independent forensic review involving credible experts whose findings could withstand both local and international scrutiny.
“For this reason, we respectfully but firmly make the following demands: A completely independent forensic review involving credible experts whose findings can withstand both local and international scrutiny. Any process clouded by uncertainty or lack of openness will continue to face public doubt.
“An independently supervised DNA process conducted transparently and professionally to finally address the prolonged controversy surrounding the paternity issue and restore public confidence in the integrity of the process.
“Full transparency regarding investigative procedures, including toxicology procedures carried out, chain of custody of samples and evidence, laboratories involved in testing, timelines of submissions and results, witness statements obtained, and clarification of contradictions that have emerged publicly. Justice cannot flourish in secrecy,” the petition read.
The group also urged the police to reevaluate key witnesses and individuals connected to the singer’s final hours while ensuring that the investigation remained free from interference or preferential treatment.
According to the group, the prolonged absence of a clear and trusted conclusion to the case had continued to fuel public speculation and weaken confidence in national institutions.
“The death of Mohbad exposed more than one tragedy. It exposed the vulnerability of young Nigerians within exploitative systems, the weakness of institutional communication, the fragility of public trust, and the consequences of investigative opacity. This matter cannot simply fade away because media attention rises and falls. Truth does not disappear because public fatigue sets in.
“We, therefore, urge the Lagos State Police Command and the office of the Inspector General of Police to recognise the gravity of this moment.
“A transparent and professionally handled conclusion to this case would not only serve justice for Mohbad but would also help restore public confidence in the integrity of Nigerian institutions. Anything less will continue to deepen public distrust,” the statement added.
Efforts to get a reaction from the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, were unsuccessful, as calls to her telephone line went unanswered.
A text message sent to her had not yet been replied to as of the time of filing this report.
