Rukayya Yakubu, the mother of Umar Auwalu who is standing trial over the m8rder of two housewives, Hauwa’u Yakubu and Zahra’u Aliyu, has testified against her son before Justice Nasiru Saminu of Kano State High Court No. 11.

The defendant is also the prime suspect in the alleged brutal k!lling of another housewife, Fatima Abubakar, and her six children.

Auwalu is also suspected to have k!lled his own sister a few years ago.

The prosecution preferred a three-count charge against the defendant, bordering on conspiracy, armed robbery and culpable homicide.

The two victims were k!lled in November 2025, with one reportedly st@bbed to d3ath, while the other was set ablaze and burnt beyond recognition during the attack.

Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude (SAN), led Rukayya Yakubu, Binta Yakubu and Anas Shuaibu in giving evidence before the court.

In her testimony, the defendant’s mother told the court that on the day of the incident, Umar offered to convey her to the residence of one of the deceased in Tundun Yola, who was her relative.

She added that he also claimed the victim owed him money, a claim she later discovered to be false.

She further gave her account under cross-examination by defence counsel A.S. Tunkuyau, after which the court adjourned the matter to May 15 for continuation of the hearing.

Umar Auwalu had earlier made headlines after he was arrested on January 17 as the prime suspect in the k!lling of his aunt and her six children in Dorayi, Chiranci quarters of Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State.
