According to a report by the Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, Abba Kabir Yusuf has warned his former political ally, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, against what he described as continuous public criticism of his administration, stressing that his calm approach should not be mistaken for fear or weakness.…....
The governor made the statement in Rano during the formal endorsement of Sulaiman Kawu Sumaila as the All Progressives Congress senatorial candidate for Kano South ahead of upcoming elections.
Yusuf explained that his government had intentionally avoided reacting to repeated attacks from Kwankwaso and his loyalists after reports of a political disagreement between both camps earlier this year. He noted that the decision to remain silent was aimed at preserving peace and political stability in Kano State.
He stated that although his administration preferred peace above all else, it could eventually respond if the criticisms continued. According to him, choosing not to speak publicly should not be interpreted as intimidation or inability to defend himself.
The governor’s remarks appeared to respond directly to recent comments reportedly made by Kwankwaso, where the former governor criticised Yusuf’s political choices and leadership style following their fallout.
Yusuf also questioned why someone he had worked closely with for many years within the Kwankwasiyya political movement would continue to criticise him publicly. He added that his restraint had been a deliberate show of maturity and respect rather than weakness.
However, he cautioned that persistent attacks might compel him to openly address certain political issues and past dealings within the movement.
Both men were once leading figures in the Kwankwasiyya movement, which has remained influential in Kano politics for years. Their relationship has reportedly worsened in recent months due to disagreements over political loyalty and the future direction of the movement.
The rift has fueled speculations about possible political realignments ahead of future elections in Kano State, regarded as one of Nigeria’s major political strongholds.
In a recent interview with Trust TV, Kwankwaso reportedly accused Yusuf of making a major political mistake by distancing himself from the Kwankwasiyya movement. He also insisted that the movement played a key role in Yusuf’s rise to power and eventual election as governor.
