The vacancy describes the role as that of a “visionary, Christ-centred servant-leader” expected to be deeply rooted in scripture and prayer.

According to the notice, the position is on a contract basis and will be based in Nairobi, with applications open until June 29.

Interested candidates, who are gifted in expository preaching and passionate about discipleship, worship, and leadership development, are required to submit a CV, cover letter, referees, and appraisals.

The announcement quickly drew mixed reactions online, with some questioning why a long-established church would seek an external senior leader rather than appointing from within its existing fellowship.

Many argued that leadership should be nurtured internally as churches traditionally prefer leaders raised within their own faith communities.

Reactions from Kenyans

Ndolo Ferdinand:

“This church has been in existence for over 50 years. You mean all this while you’ve never raised people you can install in that office of a senior pastor? How do you bring an outsider with strange DNA to come and shepherd people they have no connection with leave alone background.”

Towett Arap:

“The best pastor is in your midst, someone who understands your church doctrine is someone who was brought and nurtured there since childhood.”

Akulemi Peter:

“The church should come up with pastoral apprenticeship programme based on young graduates who are members of the church. That’s where they’ll raise the pastors and senior pastors from.”

Betty Mulunda:

“Where I come from specifically Anglican, pastors or anyone else leading in the church is born and raised in the church.”

Despite the criticism, others defended the church’s decision, saying open recruitment can bring fresh perspectives, strengthen governance, and ensure transparency in leadership selection.

The debate highlights a broader conversation on succession planning, leadership training, and whether senior pastoral roles should be reserved for internal candidates or opened up to wider applications.

As the deadline approaches, attention now turns to whether the church will receive applications from within its congregation or from candidates beyond its traditional circles.
