Leonard revealed that he dropped out while in Form Two after his family failed to raise school fees. At the time, his class teacher, identified as Agnes Mulamba, whom he fondly referred to as Becky, noticed his sudden disappearance from school and became concerned.
How teacher Becky took Leonard back to school
According to his Facebook post, Becky, who also taught English, launched what Leonard described as a full rescue mission to find him. She sent a fellow teacher, Moses Ong’ombe, from Kisumu to Gingo in Homa Bay County with very little information apart from his first name and former primary school.
The search eventually led the teacher to Leonard, who said he had already settled into village life, spending his days fishing omena and burning charcoal after giving away his school uniform and books.

“He told me, ‘Pack your things, we’re going basck to school,’” Leonard recalled humorously.
The journey back reportedly involved rushing to catch the Mbita ferry before travelling overnight to Kisumu to resume classes.
Teacher Becky supports Leonard through his university education
Leonard said Becky ensured he was never sent home again because of fees and treated him like her own child throughout his secondary school education. The kindhearted teacher paid school fees, supported him after the death of his father, and even catered for his first university fees when HELB funds were delayed.
He eventually completed high school with a B+ grade and joined Maseno University to study Communication and Media Technology with IT. In 2013, two months after graduation, he secured a job at Nation Media Group.
“Some people teach. Others change lives. Becky did both,” he wrote.
Speaking to TUKO, Leonard said he still keeps in touch with his former teacher and makes time to meet up with her whenever an opportunity arises.
