Organised labour in Lagos State has declared support for the
Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, ahead of a potential governorship bid in the
2027 election.

The endorsement was announced by the Lagos chapters of the
Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress during the 2026 Workers’
Day celebration held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Friday.

The declaration was led by the state NLC Chairperson, Agnes
Funmi Sessi, and the TUC leader, Abiodun Aladetan, signalling growing backing
for Hamzat within labour circles.

The development adds to a widening wave of endorsements
already shaping early political alignments ahead of the 2027 governorship race
in Lagos.

Within the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC,
influential stakeholders including the Governance Advisory Council, GAC, and
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu have previously indicated support for Hamzat as a
preferred successor.

The governor has described the move as part of a broader
arrangement aimed at ensuring continuity in governance and sustained
development in the state.

Further backing has also come from the state APC leadership
under Cornelius Ojelabi, as well as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of
Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.

Other groups, including the Association of Waste Managers of
Nigeria, AWAMN, have also publicly endorsed the deputy governor’s ambition.

This is not the first time labour unions in Lagos have
aligned with the Sanwo-Olu–Hamzat political structure. During the 2023
governorship election, both the NLC and TUC supported the joint ticket, which
secured a second term in office.

Reacting to the latest endorsements, Hamzat expressed
appreciation to supporters and reaffirmed his commitment to building on
existing projects in the state. He also pledged to pursue governance driven by
continuity, inclusiveness, and accountability.
